Poker is a game of skills where players have to make moves after evaluating the opponent's moves and calculating the information they have. It is a lucrative game where people play against real players each other and everybody get a chance to interact with others. Especially when we talk about online poker, the curiosity to interact with strangers doubles the excitement. This interaction gives us an opportunity to assess a player's hand by observing his behavior.
A poker tellis generally defined as a change in a player's behavior which can provide us clues in the assessment of that player's hand. A player can take the advantage of such tells if he understands and observe his opponents carefully. However, a player can pretend fake tells to deceive the opponents. But this is what poker is all about. It's not about playing cards instead it's all about playing opponents.
Tells in online poker are broadly classified as -
Betting pattern and physical tells.
Online poker tells- it may be quite difficult to observe opponents in online poker because you can't see your opponent and hence can't observe his facial expressions, body language etc. but there are few things which can help you to crack opponent's hand.
Game play speed- it generally involves observing the timing of opponents like if they are responding quickly it may show that they are having a strong hand. However, a slow pace can be a sign of weak hand.
Betting pattern- betting patterns are the most reliable poker tells. You have to keep a watch over other player's betting pattern and have to observe their timing. For instance, a large gap before calling can sometimes mean a weak hand and a fast call usually means a drawing hand.
Quantity of chips- if a player is doing all-in or raising again and again outing huge money into the pot can signify a strong hand. However, it could be a way to bluff also. Player's chat-a player's chat can also reveal a lot about his cards in hand. If he is replying to your chat with great excitement it may be that he is having a strong hand whereas a dull or late reply can be a sign of a weak hand.
Although poker tells are very helpful in a long run but they could be misleading at times. For instance, a player's tell gives information only about that player's self-assessment of in-hand cards, and can be reliable if the player has accurately assessed his own hand. But in case of novice player or an unskilled player, it may happen that the player may misread a weak hand as a strong hand and thus their tells will indicate the false expression or misinterpretation.
In fact, many players can also make mistakes by taking various natural reactions as a tell like seem like fumbling chips out of clumsiness or betting the wrong amount online when clicking the wrong button.
